We are delighted to offer for sale, this wonderful 19th Century original antique watercolour head and shoulders portrait of a young girl (label verso refers to the girl as “Dolly Batten”) signed Gerald Edward Moira, PROI, VPRWS, RWA, NPS (1867-1959). Moira was born 26th January 1867 as “Giraldo Eduardo Lobo de Moira”, the son of a Portuguese miniaturist. He studied at the RA schools, in Paris and also under JW Waterhouse. Numerous paintings of his have been exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Academy, London, and The Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. He died in Northwood, 2nd August 1959 aged 92 Moira’s paintings are in the possession of the Tate and V&A, London. Condition – The painting is surrounded by a gilt oval slip, behind glass and set within a gilt frame – please note that some wear is apparent to the edges of the frame which is commensurate with age. A beautifully drawn and painted refined miniature of Krishna at Holi. The painting measues approx. 12 x 9 1/2in including the pink border. The painting has been laid at the edges to a stiff card backing. It is in generally fine condition with some rubbing and loss to the pink border. There is some rippling from being glued at the edges. Experts will be able to date the work – to me it is early 19th Century, though possibly earlier or later. Guaranteed to be as described. This is a beautiful, antique, 19th century professionally restored European oil on canvas depicting the Madonna and Child. Most likely the original ornate, gold gilded frame, this piece has remarkable detail and great coloring. Frame measures 18 1/2″ by 22 1/2″, the painting is about 13 3/4″ by 17 1/2″. Condition: The frame is in good condition with expected wear commensurate with antique frames, there are some missing pieces of gesso, particularly on the conners, please view photo #9. The painting itself has been restored and relined, this can be seen from the back, see photo #10. The original canvas is tacked to a wooden stretcher, photo #12. There are several cracks which can be seen on the front of the painting where it was originally damaged, as in photo # 11, and there is spotting throughout the entire piece, such as can be seen in photo #8. This is not a new piece and not a perfect piece, but overall, the painting has a wonderful old world charm to it, and one must really appreciate the beauty of imperfection to truly understand this painting. This is an antique, 19th century, Spanish Colonial style LARGE wood carved and polychrome painted Crucifix, most likely originating from South America. Piece measures 29″ tall by 20 1/2″ at its widest (side to side at top of cross), by about 3 1/2″ deep. Condition is very good with normal wear and aging expected and commensurate with antique pieces. There is some paint loss here and there. There are missing wooden nails on one hand and on the feet. The piece may have originally had a crown around the head of Jesus.
