You would be right in thinking it looks a little grubby, but I decided as I didn’t know enough about them I would leave them till I did. Anyway they have been in my display cupboard since then and I have promised my husband i will sell them so here goes. Can’t see any chips fractures ect. AMERICAN FOLK PAINTERS OF THREE CENTURIES was edited by Jean Lipman and Tom Armstrong, Hudson Hills Press, Inc. N.Y. with Whitney Museum of American Art, 1980 First Edition. This remarkable book “focuses on the finest identified painters of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Individual chapters by twenty-one outstanding authorities cover the lives and works, the colorful personalities, and the travels of thirty-seven artists, including Jose Raphael Aragon, Hannah Cohoon, Erastus Salisbury Field, Rufus Hathaway, Edward Hicks, Morris Hirshfield, John Kane, Sheldon Peck, Ammi Phillips, Joseph Pickett, and Horace Pippin. Many chapters are especially fascinating for the stories of detective work involved in tracking down paintings and the artists responsible for them”. [Subjects] include portraits, landscapes, historical and biblical scenes, ship’s portraits, city views, still lifes, and visionary works that are surreal in their intensity. Many of these paintings, astonishing in their power, originality and beauty, are reproduced in color for the first time.” This volume also includes an afterword “that summarizes the history of six decades of activity in the field: the key collectors, dealers, exhibitions, and publications. 18th Century Antique Pair of Chinese Botanical Watercolor Paintings Flower

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

$1500.00*

*Will always say $0.00 for auctions.

You are bidding on an exceptional pair of 18th century Chinese botanical watercolor paintings on rice paper. These are original watercolors….NOT prints. Selling together as a pair because they were originally sold as a pair. These original watercolor paintings were painted in China in the mid to late 1700s and were brought back by European exporters on their ships. This particular pair was sold by Arthur Ackermann, at his shop in Chicago, probably in the early 1900s. Ackermann was a purveyor of antique art and had stores in London and several US cities from the late 1700s to the mid-20th century. The antique art that he sold in his store was of the very highest quality and a label from his store is basically an authentication. Many original paintings with labels from his stores have been sold at the top auction houses in the world. The paintings are housed in a double-matted, natural-colored bamboo frame. Watercolor #1 is of a large orange/red flower. Watercolor #2 is of a cream-colored flower tipped in pink, featuring three butterflies perched on the flower and one caterpillar at the base. These watercolors are very brightly painted and the quality of the work is outstanding. They are in great shape for being 250-300 years old. They rice paper and matting do have some foxing and toning in places, which show up as cafe-au-lait colored areas. This is normal for artwork on paper of this age and does not detract from the piece. Top left butterfly shows slight fading/wear. Other than that, they are in excellent condition.Only one of this pair carries the Ackermann label. However, it is clear that these were both sold by him as a pair. The label on the back of the butterfly painting reads as follows:Arthur Ackermann & Sons, Inc.of London and New YorkEstablished 1783408 South Michigan Ave, Chicago18th Century Chinese Water ColorFloral Subjecton Rice PaperThere are not many examples of 18th century Chinese Water colors on the market. Most of these are sold at the top auction houses and sell for several thousand dollars. I am offering this pair at a relatively low price. Most of the Chinese botanical watercolor paintings that you see are from the 19th century, but there are very, very few that come on the market from as early as the 18th century, as these are. I know you’ll be happy with this pair of paintings; they are some of the best examples of this type of work that I have seen.US bidders only pleaseIf you have any questions, please ask and I will be more than happy to answer. Thanks for looking!Measurements:Actual Rice Paper w/Image: 13″ x 9″With matting and frame: 22/5″ x 15.25″

From an estate sale in Northern California.Miniature Portrait measures about 2″ across and about 2.375″ long. Not a collector, but woman looks finely painted, has dark hair and blue eyes. She has a blue scarf tied around the back of her head that knots over herright shoulder. Her dress is white, I believe an Empire style dress.I can’t tell for sure but looks like right sleeve/side of the dress may havesome damage possibly a smudge, it’s hard to tell. No visible signature. Looking at the back I tell the portrait was removed from a paper backing.I can see that it is painted on a shell/bone like medium, it is transparent when I hold it to the light. Selling as is. Early 18th Century Italian School Old Master Antique Portrait Painting C.1700

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

$1750.00*

*Will always say $0.00 for auctions.

We are delighted to offer for sale this original early an early 18th Century old master oil on canvas portrait / painting. Italian school, possibly from a set of of paintings of numerous Saints or Cardinals from a religious institution which would have been common place at the turn of the 18th Century. We have been informed that the image may be of St. Bonaventure who was born during the 13th Century and canonised in the 15th Century by Pope Sixtus IV.The sitter is depicted within a roundel – his fingers do not display any ring which denote an early date for this painting – Christ can be seen at the cross and an armorial is depicted to the bottom left. For further possible meanings of the symbols within this painting, please see our own website – link detailed further below. Held within its original frame, the picture is evocative of the period which it relates.Dimensions = 73cm x 90 cm excluding frame. Condition – Craqleur to paint surface and minor loss to the paint to the immediate right of Christ on the cross albeit retouched. Relined too at some point during its life. ANTIQUE COLONIAL MINIATURE PORTRAIT / PAINTING ON IVORY – 18th Century

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

$0.00*

*Will always say $0.00 for auctions.

This antique colonial portrait on ivory is fresh from a Rhode Island estate! This lovely folk art painting on ivory is set in a 1 3/8ths x 1 7/8ths inch gold frame with glass on both sides. The miniature painting resembles the likeness of the wealthy Providence merchant and Revolutionary War patriot John Brown seen in the picture of his portrait above (see last picture). John Brown was also one of the founding members of Brown University. The portrait is not signed and I have no idea who the artist might be. There appears to be a small glue stain in the background in the upper right corner otherwise this 18th century portrait is in very good condition! As with all of my items I am starting this auction at $9.99 with NO RESERVE!
